Lapsang Souchong is a black tea with a distinctive smoky aroma and taste. Not for the faint of heart, this tea has a strong smoky flavour and a full-bodied liquor. A lot less subtle than the original Lapsang Souchong, customers who buy this tea tend to want a full-on taste explosion or to add another dimension to their Earl Grey.
Originally from the Wuyi mountains of Fujian province, China, Lapsang Souchong is a tea that has been deliberately smoked. The smoking part of the production process is traditionally done over pine wood, although that is hard to tell through the strong smoke flavour. After concerns that smoked teas could be carcinogenic, tea producers started making a lighter version of the tea that meet new European standards, such as this one.
