Description
Olive oil, just like tea, is a gift from nature. Just like tea, the flavour and the quality of the oil will depend on the terroir in which the trees grow, the type of olive the oil is made from, the time of year the olives were harvested and the skill of the person transforming the freshly harvested olives into oil.
For the last few years we have been sharing olive oil made from olives collected from the trees around our holiday home in Messinia, Greece, with customers who come to our shop in Stuttgart. Located in the Southwest Peloponnese, beautifully green and natural, the area of Messinia is like one huge olive grove, with buildings dotted around between the trees. While Kalamata olives and Kalamata olive oil are world famous, oil produced from the trees growing in the hills of Messinia is particularly famous and consistently wins prizes in international competitions.
This oil comes from one of our neighbours in the hills of Messinia, from a family that has been producing olive oil since 1896. Aware of the importance of protecting the environment and that they are in a unique position to share a wonderful “product”, younger generation brother and sister Dimitris and Ioanna Anagnostopoulos are doing all they can to ensure that their family legacy will continue even in the face of challenges such as climate change.
One of the things they have done is introduce an innovative new technology to the production process. They are the first press to have done this in Greece and the result is in excellent oil with an even lower acidity than normal and a high level of polyphenols. The new technology that makes this possible also makes the process more efficient, saving energy and water.
Having committed to the new technology they also spent time on designing and creating the “One & Olive” brand. This reflects the purity of the oil and also the connection between the farmer and the land: The “one” in the logo represents the shape of a farmer with his arms folded after a hard day’s work.
Just like tea, even “extra virgin” olive oil comes in different in qualities and flavour profiles. And just like you can blend tea from different gardens, elevations or even harvests, you can either take the oil as it comes from the press, or you can blend it with oil made from olives harvested from different elevations and on different days.
This “early harvest” extra virgin olive oil, blended by Dimitri, is made from 100% Koroneiki olives, harvested in early November 2022. Full of ripe olive aroma (the smell in the press when the oil is being produced is amazing), spicy, slightly bitter and with subtle almond notes it raises the bar with regards to flavour and quality of Messinian olive oil, which is already very high.
Needless to say we are extremely happy to have discovered “One & Olive” and are delighted to be the first fans in Germany to share this fantastic oil with our customers.
