Dragon Well (Long Jing) is one of China’s “10 famous teas” and has been prized since the Tang Dynasty (when it was mentioned in the first book about tea) for its restorative qualities, mellow taste, floral aroma and flat, shiny leaves.
Legend has it that hundreds of years ago, farmers in the Hangzhou region were suffering from a long, desperate drought. Praying for rain, they discovered a great dragon near a spring on the hillside. The farmers implored the dragon to come to their rescue, and soon after, clouds formed over their fields and the rains emerged. The temple adjoining the legendary spring is known as “Dragon’s Well Monastery” and thus, the derivation of the name for Long Jing – Dragon Well.
A classic wok-roasted green tea, because of its popularity, Dragon Well is often imitated. This batch, harvested in April 2021 comes from various small farmholding in the nature reserve Xijing Shan at West Lake, the home of Dragon Well and which is now a protected area encompassing some 180 square km. Our other organic “Tonglu Dragon Well” also comes from Zhejiang province and although we find it just as good, its name does not share the glamour of the West Lake label.
The vivid green leaves infuse to reveal a pleasant aroma that is refreshingly light with a hint of fruit and nut combined. The aftertaste comes quickly, filling your mouth with a sweetness reminiscence of grapes and sweet chestnuts.
This is one of the best Dragon Well teas you will find in Europe: highly refreshing, revitalising, mellow and slightly sweet ,it can be enjoyed all throughout the day.
