Japan is best known for producing superb quality green tea, and although they have been producing black tea for some time, it has only recently started to become popular in Europe. Japanese Koucha (Kou = black, Cha = tea) is made from the same cultivars of the tea plant as green tea, but the production method is different. If you like a full-bodied black tea that is floral, sweet, and nutty at the same time, then this is a tea for you!
Now here’s something you don’t come across every day in Europe – a Japanese black tea!
The type of cultivar used for this tea is the “Benifuuki” variety and the tea name come from the Kawanabe (Chiran) region in Kagoshima. Because cultivars such as Benifuuki are usually used for green tea and are different from the ones grown in the main black tea producing countries, Japanese black tea can taste quite different to what you might be used to. Although black/dark reddish brown in the cup, this is a very delicate, sweet, black tea, with a fragrance reminiscent of vineyard peaches and jasmine.
This refreshing tea is perfect for an early morning “wake me up” tea or in the afternoon as a pick-me-up.
