Shino is a type of glaze that was developed in kilns in Japan’s Mino and Seto areas during the Momoyama period (1568–1600). Matcha bowls made in the Shino style tend to range in colour from cloudy white to reddish-orange, sometimes displaying charcoal grey spotting, which is known as “carbon trap”.
The addition of “Shiroi” to the name of this Shino style matcha bowl from Banko indicates that the bowl has a predominantly white glaze. A particulary fine example of Shino style, the thick white glaze seems to run down the outside of the bowl, forming a smooth finish at the base, forming a nice contrast with the raw feeling of unglazed foot. The plain white inside of the bowl provides a wonderful contrast to the vivid green of freshly prepared matcha.
