The popular pattern on the paper used to make these pretty tea caddies is so named because its overlapping arcs of small dots resemble shark skin. It was used by the Kishū Tokugawa family, to which Shōgun Tokugawa Yoshimune (1684–1751) belonged. Each caddy has an inner lid to help preserve the tea’s flavour.
This Japanese washi tea caddy is covered with traditional Japanese Washi paper. Stronger and more durable than most papers, washi paper is made using the fibres of various plants. This gives it a slightly texture and makes it flexible and strong: making it an attractive covering for a tea caddy.
