The tea plant is an evergreen tree of the genus Camellia. The specific species is Camellia Sinensis, which has two main varieties: Camellia Sinensis Sinensis and Camellia Sinensis Assamica. The Assamica variety is native to the north-eastern Indian state of Assam, which has over 900 tea estates and is the largest tea producing region in the world.
Assam is a tropical area and tea is usually harvested four times a year, with the second flush in June being the best. There are two types of tea produced in Assam: orthodox and CTC. Our selection only includes orthodox tea, which is made using traditional techniques and is considered superior in quality to CTC, which is used for tea bags.
Assam tea is often used in blends that are drunk with milk, such as English Breakfast Tea, but the premium grades, which are full-bodied in the cup and have a rich, malty flavour, are ideal for drinking without milk.
