Malawi Satemwa Antlers

Any tea purist will tell you that traditionally, white tea is made purely from the youngest buds of the tea plant. Malawi Satemwa Antlers White Tea turns this tradition its head! Made purely from stems, it proves that beauty, sweetness, and complexity can be found in other parts of the plant.

Description

Malawi Satemwa Antlers White Tea is a hidden gem in the world of tea. Rare and exquisite, and made solely of stems (no leaves!), this unique tea has a delicate and complex flavour profile that perfectly captures the essence of creative and sustainable farming. Grown in the rolling Shire Highlands of Malawi at over 1000 metres altitude, this exceptional tea comes from the pioneering Satemwa Tea Estate, a small family-run garden now in it’s third generation and known in the tea world for its innovation, fairness, environmental care, and community wellbeing.  The estate ensures fair wages, supports local families, and promotes sustainable farming practices that protect the surrounding landscape. In 2025, Sabine visited the Satemwa Estate, witnessing first-hand the care, skill, and integrity that go into every stage of their tea production. Her visit made it possible for us to get this rare tea and confirmed that Satemwa’s values are more than just words.

What sets Malawi Satemwa Antlers white tea apart is that it is made from the velvety stems of finely plucked spring shoots, rather than the leaves or buds. Resembling antlers, these elegant stems beautifully express the unique terroir and character of the estate in the tea itself. Only a few kilos of this tea are produced each year, making it a rare and highly sought-after rarity. The combination of these rare stems, the terroir, meticulous cultivation practices by a family committed to bio-organic farming, and the slow, natural growth process of the tea plants results in this exceptional tea.

Satemwa Antlers White Tea has a subtle flavour profile with floral and fruity notes. The first infusion reveals soft sweetness and notes of lychee, apricot and honey. Subsequent infusions (we recommend up to six) reveal new layers of flavour and depth. With each subsequent infusion, the taste evolves into delicate woody and umami tones, creating a soothing, harmonious tea experience that remains smooth and free of bitterness.

Brewing Instructions:

Use 3g of tea per cup (about one heaped teaspoon) and pour over 150ml of freshly boiled water. Steep for 2 minutes to soften the stems and release their gentle sweetness. Don’t worry if you steep it longer, the stems contain very few tannins, so the tea remains smooth and well-balanced.

Re-infuse several times, extending the brewing time slightly with each infusion. Each steep reveals a new dimension – many tea lovers enjoy up to six or more infusions from the same leaves.

Try this unusual tea as alternative to the Chinese Silver Needle, we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the complexity of flavour.
