Description
The origins of the classic Earl Grey tea are shrouded in mystery, with many intriguing stories adding to its rich heritage. One well-known story is that during a diplomatic visit to China, an envoy of Prime Minister Charles Grey heroically saved the son of a Chinese mandarin from drowning. In gratitude, the mandarin had a Chinese tea master create a unique tea for the Prime Minister, Charles, the 2nd Earl Grey.
The story goes that Earl Grey instructed Twinings of London to reproduce the tea, which they then named after him. It goes on to say that Lady Grey began serving it at social events in London, where it became popular. She then urged her husband to make the tea more widely available. Earl Grey requested Twinings to create a tea that would mask the lime flavour in the water at his Northumberland estate, Howick Hall. Given the importance of water quality in tea preparation, this version of the story seems highly credible.
