If you’ve noticed a matcha price increase recently, you’re not alone — and you’re certainly not imagining it. A mix of factors including poor harvests, labour shortages, and growing international demand has led to a shortage of high-quality matcha, particularly from Japan’s renowned regions such as Uji and Kagoshima. While the domestic market in Japan has seen some pressure, the impact has been especially pronounced on exports, where competition for limited supply is driving prices higher.
In this article, we’ll take a closer look at how the global matcha shortage is leading to a matcha price increase, and what it means for matcha lovers in Europe.

Fears about lack of supply so far unfounded
Just a few weeks ago, we feared that some of our most beloved matcha varieties might become unavailable – whatever the price. Fortunately, that’s not the case, our stock levels have returned to where we’d like them to be. However, due to rising wholesale costs, we’ve had to increase a few of our matcha prices. While our premium Uji matcha remains at its usual price, the freshly ground Keiko varieties have unfortunately become more expensive.
