Japan is best known for producing superb quality green tea, and although they have been producing black tea for some time, it has only recently started to become popular in Europe. Japanese Koucha (Kou = black, Cha = tea) is made from the same cultivars of the tea plant as green tea, but the production method is different. If you like a full-bodied black tea that is floral, sweet, and nutty at the same time, then this is a tea for you!
Kawanabe Koucha is a rare and elegant Japanese black tea from Keiko, stemming from the Kawanabe (Chiran) region of Kagoshima, southern Japan. Made from the Benifuuki cultivar, this organic tea stands out from more traditional black teas thanks to its unique origin and gentle character.
While Benifuuki is usually used for green tea, here it has been carefully oxidised to create a black tea that’s distinctly Japanese in both flavour and feel. Kawanabe Koucha brews into a soft, reddish-brown liquor with delicate notes of vineyard peaches and jasmine. The texture is smooth and lightly sweet, with a refreshing, clean finish.
Because the tea plants used in Kawanabe Koucha are different from those found in India or Sri Lanka, this tea offers a completely different black tea experience, subtle, aromatic, and perfectly balanced.
