Far too special to be labelled simply “Lady Grey”, our “Mary Grey” is named after Countess Mary Grey, the wife of Earl Grey. It also pays tribute to Nel Gwyn, the orange seller who became the mistress of the man who first made tea popular in England – King Charles 2nd.
Lady Grey – or in the case of our own blend, Mary Grey tea – is a popular variation on the classic Earl Grey. Created by Twinings in the early 1990s in response to feedback from the Scandinavian market, it was designed to appeal to those who found Earl Grey tea too strong. While Lady Grey still contains the unmistakable flavour of bergamot, this is balanced by the addition of lemon and orange, resulting in a tea that is both refreshing and aromatic. Understandably, the Lady Grey brand name is exclusive to Twinings, so other tea blenders and retailers offer variations under different names, which is just what we are doing with our beloved Mary Grey.
Even if we could use the Twinings name to call our own blend Lady Grey, our Mary Grey is far too special for such a label. Firstly, our name pays homage to Countess Mary Grey, the esteemed wife of Earl Grey. It also celebrates the legacy of Nell Gwyn, the famous orange seller who became the mistress of King Charles II. Together with his wife Catharine and the ladies of their court, King Charles II made tea popular in England. Finally, our tea is blended in small batches using a base of organic Chinese, African and Darjeeling teas and flavoured with premium organic cold-pressed oils.
The flavour profile of our Mary Grey tea is a harmonious blend of bergamot, lemon peel and orange zest, making a fragrant and citrusy brew that is both soothing and invigorating. To fully appreciate its subtle nuances, Mary Grey tea is best enjoyed without milk, allowing its delicate flavours to shine through. However, a touch of honey or a slice of lemon could enhance the citrus notes.
Mary Grey tea pairs beautifully with a range of sweet treats. Its citrusy profile complements light, fruity desserts such as lemon tarts, orange scones and fruity pastries. For a truly indulgent experience, try it with Earl Grey shortbread cookies or a slice of Victoria sponge cake.
