Description
This excellent-value organic gyokuro comes from a small, award-winning, family-run tea garden in Shibushi, southern Kagoshima. Renowned for its commitment to quality and sustainable cultivation, the garden specialises in high-grade organic teas. Its hand-picked gyokuro is particularly sought after by discerning tea connoisseurs.
Gyokuro is considered one of Japan’s finest green teas, prized for its deep umami richness, smooth mouthfeel, and delicate sweetness. What sets gyokuro apart is its cultivation method: the tea plants are shaded for 20 to 30 days before harvest. This shading reduces sunlight exposure, increasing levels of L-theanine and caffeine, which together create a flavour profile that is both stimulating and calming.
In addition, gyokuro is produced from the youngest, most tender leaves of the first picking period of the year. These young leaves are naturally higher in caffeine and brimming with flavour.
This Shibushi gyokuro is a blend of three cultivars: Haruto 34, Saemidori, and Seimei. The tea bushes are shaded for 3 to 4 weeks prior to harvesting. Once picked, the leaves are lightly steamed (asamushi) to preserve their fine structure, then gently heated to fix the tea, maintaining its fresh, nuanced character.
The resulting infusion is smooth and full-bodied, with a fresh, vegetal aroma and a hint of seaweed. On the palate, it delivers a mellow, sweet flavour with generous umami – a satisfying and comforting cup of eta.
With its superb flavour and, for a luxury tea, an affordable price, Shibushi Gyokuro is an ideal choice for those seeking a premium gyokuro that offers both character and good value.
