Schell Dark Chocolate Organic Arriba Guayas, 74% Cocoa

Produced by the El Deseo cooperative in the Guayas region, Schell dark chocolate Arriba Guayas combines traditional cocoa cultivation with certified organic farming and fine artisan chocolate-making. Crafted from rare Arriba Nacional cocoa grown in Ecuador, Arriba Guayas is a beautifully balanced dark chocolate with remarkable depth and elegance.

The name “Arriba” has a fascinating history. It is said to originate from early traders who, while travelling upstream along the Guayas River, were struck by the intense cocoa aroma carried “from upstream” – or arriba in Spanish.

A Complex Aromatic Profile

This exceptional chocolate reveals a vibrant and harmonious flavour profile. Notes of ripe red fruits and fresh raspberries form the core of its character, lifted by bright citrus nuances of orange and lime. Delicate floral hints add elegance and softness, while a smooth cocoa base provides structure and depth.

The result is a refined, well-balanced dark chocolate with a long, elegant finish that highlights the natural complexity of Ecuadorian Arriba cocoa.

Unique Origin – Cocoa from the Guayas Region

The cocoa used in this chocolate comes from the renowned Guayas region of Ecuador, one of the most important origins for fine flavour cocoa worldwide. It is cultivated by the El Deseo cooperative, which is dedicated to organic farming practices, fair working conditions and traditional cocoa cultivation methods.

The fertile soils, tropical climate and careful post-harvest fermentation contribute to the cocoa’s distinctive aromatic richness and clarity of flavour.

Pairing Recommendations

Traditionally enjoyed with characterful wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, or a bold Chardonnay, this chocolate also pairs beautifully with tea. Try it with a chocolatey Chinese Black Tea to complement the chocolate’s warm, spicy notes, while a lightly oxidised oolong provides a delightful contrast between the chocolate’s richness and the tea’s nutty, comforting aroma.
