Description
Those of you who have visited Sri Lanka and taken a trip to the hills behind Galle to the Sinharaja Nature Reserve will have seen the lush, green carpet of tea that spreads out over the countryside. Most of the gardens that make up that carpet are farmed by smallholder families, who adhering to international organic standards, care for the plants and sell their plucked leaves to local factories.
The Tea Estate Ahinsa processes leaves from more than 180 such smallholders. In Sanskrit, Ahinsa means „non-violent“ and the name of the Estate reflects the values of the company: When the owners of the company who bought the factory in 1999 set out their goals, their main focus was to produce high quality organic tea while at the same time taking care of the environment, the people involved in the work and of course the plants and animals that add to the splendid biodiversity of the region.
This beautifully black tea with wiry long leaves is a perfect example of a high quality Orange Pekoe. Perfect as a afternoon pick me up, this classic Ceylon tea has a hint of caramel and cocoa.
