Glenburn Good Fortune First Flush Darjeeling: 100% profit to charity
There are 87 tea gardens in Darjeeling, and the ones that we like to buy tea from have a structure like a family, With the Estate Manager acting as a parent, providing a safe and nurturing environment for the workers and their families.
The remote locations of many tea gardens means that the tea pickers and factory workers have all their basic needs, such as housing, crèches, schools, and clinics, provided for by the estate. The key word here is “basic”. Although we have seen with our own eyes that the workers have nice homes, are able to grow their own vegetables, can afford to buy clothing etc., we are aware that a basic village school education will not result in a child going on to higher education.
And that is something Glenburn Tea Estate is aiming to change. In addition to being a working tea garden, Glenburn is home to a luxury boutique hotel. Guests at the hotel are invited to experience all aspects of tea garden life, including meeting the children who live on the estate by helping at the after-school library or taking part in craft sessions. They are also invited to make donations towards the cost of children from the estate going to privately run schools in faraway Darjeeling town.
Rather than make a one-off donation, in 2015 we started paying for Mahima to go to boarding school. She is now in her final two years of schooling and has chosen to focus on science as she is keen to pursue a degree in pharmacy after she completes her ISC exams.
In 2017 we started paying for Rythme to attend a private day school about a forty minute drive from Glenburn. After Covid he decided he also wanted to go to boarding school and is now doing well in class 4.
For the first time since we started supporting the children the costs increased this year. And they increased significantly. That is why we decided to introduce this special Glenburn First Flush Darjeeling Blend, the entire profit of which will go towards paying for Mahima’s and Rhythme’s continuing education.
When you choose this tea you are not just buying a tea that tastes good and you will enjoy, you are investing in the future of two young people who had the good fortune to be born on a tea estate that we had the good fortune to visit. Hence the name: Glenburn Good Fortune First Flush Darjeeling Blend.
This mild Darjeeling First Flush Blend has a fine and flowery taste and a light golden cup. With no trace of bitterness at all, this is a tea that could be enjoyed at any time of the day. Like all first flush Darjeeling teas, Glenburn Good Fortune First Flush Darjeeling is a tea that tastes best drunk plain, without milk or sugar.
