The essence of purity and delicacy, white tea is the least processed of the six tea categories and the finest white teas are made from prized harvests consisting almost entirely of buds, which are the youngest, most nutritious leaves of the tea plant. Known for its delicate flavour profile and numerous health benefits, teas such as Silver Needle are a true connoisseur’s delight.
Harvested just once a year in spring from the prized first plucking of the year, the buds and tender young leaves are carefully plucked just before the leaves open on the stem and then dried in the sun to preserve their colour and flavour. The chlorophyll in the buds does not mature, giving the tea its distinctive pale, golden appearance.
When brewed, white tea produces a pale golden liquor with a fresh, delicate flavour. But don’t be fooled by its delicate appearance! Many people associate the colour white with purity and assume that the tea is caffeine free. In reality, all teas made from the tea plant contain some amount of caffeine.
