Description
This Darjeeling First Flush comes from the garden Puttabong, where the plants used to make the best teas grow at high altitudes.
The letters after the name of this tea signify the grade of tea. In theory, the more letters after a tea’s name, the better. Only used for black teas from countries other than China, in this case they stand for “Special Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe 1st Grade, made from special china hybrid plants (clonal plants) from the first flush harvest. Bearing in mind that the Dutch were the first Europeans to trade with tea in Europe, the “Orange” means that the tea would have been good enough quality for the Dutch Royal Family, and Pekoe is an adaption a Chinese word which referred to the fine white hairs of the tea leaf.
Located in the hills just 9km northeast of Darjeeling town, and stretching over 22 kilometers at altitudes ranging from 600 to the dizzy heights of 2300m, Puttabong is one of oldest and largest producers of high quality teas in Darjeeling and takes great pride in being not only organic but also Rain Forest Alliance and fair trade certified.
This organically grown Darjeeling Puttabong First Flush from the early days of the 2022 first flush harvest is very pleasant, with a beautiful bloom and a sprinkle of fine silver tips. Infused for three minutes, the liquor is pale brown, bright and golden. The infusion is smooth on the palate, buttery with hints of pineapple and tropical fruits.
